Midnight Sun is meant to give us deeper insight into Edward’s mind – that is, to make us understand what it is like to be a vampire – but Meyer’s writing is so undescriptive and sensationalised that this never materialises.

Given that her readership has aged, we might expect Meyer to write in a more mature style, as JK Rowling did in the later Harry Potter novels. It is simply a rehashing of events, this time told from the perspective of vampire Edward Cullen. Midnight Sun does not introduce any new plot to the saga. The novel has clearly been written for series devotees, likely pre-teens when Twilight, the first novel in the series, was published and now in the early throes of adulthood. The book reads like fan fiction and, though its blurb taunts us with “fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts”, it never lives up to this suggestion of intriguing insider knowledge. Stephenie Meyer dedicates the fifth book in her Twilight saga to the fans – appropriate, as it is hard to imagine anyone other than the most loyal subscriber savouring Midnight Sun.
